Though the PSP has long been hacked traditional methods of obtaining kernel access did not work on the PSP 3000, preventing fans from using pirated UMDs. The new console, therefore, was once considered “unhackable.”

The (hacking) story did not end there however as yesterday Datel released a new battery peripheral called the Datel’s Lite Blue Tool which can boot the Sony PSP 3000 into service mode and allow downgrading to an earlier version where cracked firmware is possible.

In response, Sony promptly announced that another PSP firmware upgrade would come soon:

Just a quick update, we’ll be making PSP firmware update 5.02 available shortly. This update improves system software stability during use of some features, including the PlayStation Store.
